Object and Architecture Mapping
SCINTILLATION by Xavier Chassaing
This amazing piece of film was made by Xavier Chassaing using a photographic process combined with stop motion. The result although innovative and spectacular requires no 3D process (i.e. Maya or 3D studio max etc). As a result the film has a less “constructed “feel and more of a surreal quality.
Preface
In previous semesters I have tried mapping as a process from conceptualization in Maya then flat plane development then printing. These objects as you know where then constructed and an animation made in Maya..
As the object in virtual space and the object in real life where to all intense and purposes exactly the same (with a few analogue errors). The animation was then projected on the surface to achieve the augmentation
Although it worked well, so much time was spent on process and construction that we did not have much time for animation and interaction with the final installation. So this time I plan to concentrate on the image, motion and narrative side of the project. Which basically means we will use real world “found” objects, architecture, people (think augmented fashion) etc as the basis for the work. The primary objective of this project is to find a narrative bridge between the physical and virtual worlds. Every object or building for example has a history of process, we could speculate about that through the mapping of images or we could think about the future of objects and architecture and apply the same rules.
Project >
Part One>>
Object and Architecture Mapping – Part One - Duration 2 weeks.
Please research a familiarize yourself with mapping techniques and theories.
Set up a blog and vimeo account specifically for this class. Find and show examples and try to analyze the process of visual augmentation.
Presentation – will be collected images and movies with your written analysis.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Two>>
Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Two - Duration 3 weeks.
Here we will conceptualize a narrative for projection and find a specific object or group of objects that you will use. The most important thing here is to tell a story or create a mood, this at present in mapping is usually abstract motion graphics, if we can avoid this surface trap then all the better.
Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Three>>
Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Three - Duration 3 weeks.
First tests of the final work. Having found your object etc we will concentrate of the process of animation.
Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Four>>
Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Four - Duration 4 weeks.
Final animations and development.
This will be the final development and presentation of your project.
You will make a final movie of your work and present that as well as making a process movie about the construction and meaning of your work
Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.
As this is the spring semester I will choose 2 or 3 of the best projects for exhibition.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE – You do not need any 3D skills for this project. You will however be required to know some 2D animation techniques (i.e. After effects, Photoshop and maybe flash.)
