Media Environment Unit Two – AR Systems

David Hall "Augmented 2008"

Media Environment Unit Two – AR Systems
Augmented Environment Concepts and Development
Converging Media and Environment Experimental integration.

Preface
This class will be a production design and concept class with an eye on new and future user experience ( UX ) within the city. As ubiquitous sensors, mobile phones, media facades, social networks and entertainment technologies all start to converge we are seeing a new type of media integration into our daily lives in the city. In the beginning what appeared to be practical tools of information and communication  ( mobile phones, the web,etc ) are now being utilised as more of a social entertainment medium than anything else.

Some educated speculations about the hardware of the near future could be, rapid prototyped architecture ( printed buildings ) cheap and affordable media facades, spacial interactive projections ( low cost holographs ), embedded silicon chips in the human body ( mobile phones, IDs and computers integrated into the human body ), retinal projection displays, to name but a few. So the questions stands what can we as media designers do with all this change and connectedness given that it will be used for new entertainments etc etc.

This project could be graphics for new architecture and media facades, interactive environments, new forms of signage and information displays, new forms of graffiti, new entertainment spaces such as night clubs and new forms of fashion etc.

We will develop visual concepts based in a probable technological development. The concept which delivers your own design of Augmented Reality Environment in the future. The final output will be a movie or piece of motion graphics developed by the production design process.

Augmented Environment – Part One – SetUp -
Duration 2 weeks

As part of a systematic approach to documentation and presentation during this semester I want each student to setup and design the following.

1- A blogspot blog specifically for this class.

2- A vimeo account ( if you don’t have one already )
3- A pdf template design that we will use as a final document for each stage. ( this will be embedded in your blog for download.
4- Upload a brief description of yourself with ONE drawing, photo or graphic of one of your best pieces of work.

Please think carefully about the design of your blogs etc The minimal approach is the way to go.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Augmented Environment – Part Two – Research -
Duration 2 weeks

Please research and think about the present state of augmented reality, environments and fashion.

It may help to choose an area such as…

1 – Architecture and interiors
2 – Signage and Street ( Public space )
3 – Fashion
4 – Games and Entertainment
5 – Art and Installation

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Augmented Environment – Part Three - Concept Generation -
Duration 3 weeks

Here we will brainstorm ideas that will be the basis of your project. This process will include, location scouting, photography, drawing, test shooting DV, concept drawing and basic 3D.

As we are thinking about concepts and not practical development, we will develop your ideas via a production design process. This basically means the following steps..

1 – Visual Research
2 – Drawings and photographs
3 – 3D sketching and visual overlays
4 - Detailing 3D and Visualisation

During this stage I will demonstrate how to use syntheys, maya setup and rendering, HDRI techniques, location shooting and DV etc

You do not need to be an expert in 3D or any other programs or skills. But you will need a basic knowledge to be able to do this assignment.

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Augmented Environment – Part Four -  Final Development -
Duration 7 weeks

Here I will teach the basics of CG and DV integration.

Software will include, Syntheyes, HDRI light studio, maya rendering and texturing. We will utilise all of these for our final movie output.

This will be the final development and presentation of your project. You will make a final movie of your work and present that as well as making a process movie about the construction and meaning of your work

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.

Final output of this project will be photographs, renderings and movies.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Augmented Environment – Part Five -  Output Synergy -
Duration 1 week

Collation of movies, photos, drawings etc into your presentation formats. ie blog, pdf and vimeo integration.

NOTE – You do need basic 3D skills for this project. You will however be required to know some 2D animation techniques (i.e. After effects, Photoshop and maybe flash.)

Media Art Unit Two – Motion Graphics and Interaction

Media Art Unit Two – Motion Graphics and Interaction
Visual Development and interaction with Focus on MS Kinect

Preface
This semesters Media Art class will be split into two distinct sections.
Visual development and then practical integration into an instalation.

The visual developmet section will be divided into themes for initial research. You will choose one theme for the whole semester.
So you will choose one of the following..

Option OneAbstract graphics and Audio
This will be an approach looking at the principles of audio waves and effects for visual development. Its more important to focus on the physical and sientific concepts of sound and how it manifests in the physical world. Cymatics would be one example of this.

Option TwoHuman Desire and attraction
This will be a more emotional approach looking at fetishism and fashion for example.

Option ThreeZ-Depth and motion
Here you can concentrate on the practical use of a kinect device to generate z-deph movies. The project here will be about technical problem solving and environmet experiment. Resulting in a movie entirely generated by infra red zdeph information.

As well as conceptualising and visual development this project will also be about how we can use the kenect device in unusual ways. That means not just using it for its intended purpose of translating user motion into abstract graphics ( person waves their arms around and this results in a pretty motion trail on a screen or projection ). But new ways of inegration the device.

Motion Graphics and Interaction – Part One - Duration 2 weeks

As part of a systematic approach to documentation and presentation during this semester I want each student to setup and design the following.

1- A blogspot blog specifically for this class.
2- A vimeo account ( if you don’t have one already )
3- A pdf template design that we will use as a final document for each stage. ( this will be embedded in your blog for download.
4- Upload a breif description of yourself with ONE drawing, photo or graphic of one of your best pieces of work.

Motion Graphics and Interaction – Part Two - Duration 4 weeks

Please choose one of the thematic areas listed above and research that area. This means looking at possible directions in that area and brainstorming how you can creativly develop them.

Presentation will be in the form of phtographs, drawings etc uploaded to your blog. Its important to also write about the project and theme you are researching. This means analysis of your discoveries through written text.

Its important to be able to contructivly analyse in the written form as this will be a major part of your thesis.

Motion Graphics and Interaction – Part Three- Duration 5 weeks

Practical development of your ideas and concepts.
This will be a research by practical development process. That meas doing experiments with hardware and visuals

Motion Graphics and Interaction – Part Four- Duration 3 weeks

This will be a practical approach to instalation. Your project should be finish in part three. This final part will be the process of how we can install this work in a gallery.

As you know this class is related to the green growth project and as such will will need to install to complet the work.

IMPORTANT. This class is a follow on from last semeter with the added discipline of the Konect device. However you do not need to have done media Art One in order to do this class. As long as you have some practical skill and are willing to learn this class will be open to everybody.

Media Environment Unit One – Media Space

Space, Interaction and 3/4G mobile phones.
Jongno Elf by Dave Hall 2005

Preface
This will be an introduction class to the concepts of motion graphics, space design for next and present generation mobile phones.

Project >>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part One

Media Space – Part One - Duration 3 weeks.
QuickTime Virtual reality
This will be a very quick intro project. Well will spend a couple of weeks making some QTVR (QuickTime Virtual reality) movies. QuickTime Virtual Reality movies are technically very easy to produce and provide a first step towards interaction and
movies.

Usually QTVR movies are used for location advertisements on the web etc. Here however I want people to think more broadly about creative was to modify the image. At this point please make a blog and vimeo account specifically for this class.

Presentation - Will be an online demo of your QTVR experiments.

Digital and Analogue Graffing by Dave Hall 2005

Part Two

Media Space – Part Two - Duration 5 weeks.
Graphics, Graffiti and Architecture.
As this is a stepping stone project towards project Three (see below). We will try digital graffiti and its many forms. This could be 3D or Projection or something entirely different depending on each student’s skill level. The main objective is the use space and graphics within the confines of architecture and the city.

Presentation - Will be given showing photographs, models and movies of your project. Final presentation will be the process and story uploaded to your blog.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Three

Media Space – Part Three- Duration 5 weeks.
Space Design and graphics for 3G mobile phones
This will be where we test environments using the program Unity. We will make graphic interactions rather than a game. These projects will be uploaded to your android or I phone using Unity3D.

Presentation - Will be given using your 3G phone and your project tests.
Final presentation will be the process and story uploaded to your blog.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE – Project three may change depending on the arrival of a 3D printer I have ordered.

Project Three Options >
Please choose ONE of the following for the final 7 week Project.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option One _ Audio Driven Motion Graphics.

David Hall - Audio dynamic structure 2006

Here we are going to construct a movie based on the concept sound driven graphics.
ie - The image will be driven by the soundtrack.
I expect you to construct the audio track first then use with to create the key points of the graphic motion. It can be real time or pre - rendered.
Some Details here...http://opiumblue.blogspot.com/2008/08/motion-graphic-studio.html

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Option Two _ Form and Animation.

David Hall - Anim Forms 2007

Here we are going to construct an object based on audio animation.
First we will generate the audio signal then we will use this to create an animation which will be printed ( via laser cutting ) to create an object.

We could call this a 3D font.
Final output and details here...http://opiumblue.blogspot.com/2009/08/digital-form-and-fabrication.html

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option Three _ Zdepth and Motion.

David Hall - Z organics "the traveller" 20010

Here we are going to construct a movie based on the concept of the Z and zdepth.
I expect it to be 50% real footage and 50% CG
Final output and details here...http://opiumguide.blogspot.com/

Media Art Unit One - Augmented Reality

Object and Architecture Mapping

SCINTILLATION by Xavier Chassaing

This amazing piece of film was made by Xavier Chassaing using a photographic process combined with stop motion. The result although innovative and spectacular requires no 3D process (i.e. Maya or 3D studio max etc). As a result the film has a less “constructed “feel and more of a surreal quality.

Preface
In previous semesters I have tried mapping as a process from conceptualization in Maya then flat plane development then printing. These objects as you know where then constructed and an animation made in Maya..

As the object in virtual space and the object in real life where to all intense and purposes exactly the same (with a few analogue errors). The animation was then projected on the surface to achieve the augmentation

Although it worked well, so much time was spent on process and construction that we did not have much time for animation and interaction with the final installation. So this time I plan to concentrate on the image, motion and narrative side of the project. Which basically means we will use real world “found” objects, architecture, people (think augmented fashion) etc as the basis for the work. The primary objective of this project is to find a narrative bridge between the physical and virtual worlds. Every object or building for example has a history of process, we could speculate about that through the mapping of images or we could think about the future of objects and architecture and apply the same rules.

Project >

Part One>>

Object and Architecture Mapping – Part One - Duration 2 weeks.

Please research a familiarize yourself with mapping techniques and theories.
Set up a blog and vimeo account specifically for this class. Find and show examples and try to analyze the process of visual augmentation.

Presentation – will be collected images and movies with your written analysis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Two>>

Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Two - Duration 3 weeks.
Here we will conceptualize a narrative for projection and find a specific object or group of objects that you will use. The most important thing here is to tell a story or create a mood, this at present in mapping is usually abstract motion graphics, if we can avoid this surface trap then all the better.

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Three>>

Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Three - Duration 3 weeks.
First tests of the final work. Having found your object etc we will concentrate of the process of animation.

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part Four>>

Object and Architecture Mapping – Part Four - Duration 4 weeks.
Final animations and development.

This will be the final development and presentation of your project.
You will make a final movie of your work and present that as well as making a process movie about the construction and meaning of your work

Presentation – Drawings, photos and initial experiments.
As this is the spring semester I will choose 2 or 3 of the best projects for exhibition.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE
– You do not need any 3D skills for this project. You will however be required to know some 2D animation techniques (i.e. After effects, Photoshop and maybe flash.)
