Morphic Future

Design Workshop Project 001

Course Professor David Hall

Morphic Future
(Everyday Musings of the Everyday Future)

DURATION - 14 WEEKS
PRESENTATION - WEEK 3, WEEK 5, WEEK 8, WEEK 11 AND FINAL WEEK 14.

PREFACE

Everyone has a concept of the future, its part of the human condition to forecast and speculate in a detailed
and sophisticated manner. As with all speculation there is no write or wrong answer.

The opinions of experts as well as ordinary people about what they consider to be the future can shed light on the present zeitgeist like no other. Locked within speculative imagination is one of the keys to understanding our present condition.

The modern world for example seems to be obsessed with the “Simulacra “ as well as with general synthesis of the physical self. The projection of the physical body has become one of the holy grails of modern computing (AI being another). This is commonly known as “ Telepresence “. And the mythology goes that once this simulacrum is achieved then unlimited possibilities will result.

I am curious about the reactions to the above statement from people of all walks of life. Also there are many other questions you may wish to ask (and should).

METHOD

You will research what kind of interview / questions and people you will use to record an interview.
Then after test recording you will compile 2 or 3 audio interviews that will be edited in a audio software App such as sound forge or cubase ( with some effects and DSP processing ) for an baseline audio track. With a running time of between 1 to 3 minutes.

After you make the audio track you will shoot DV, Animation (Analogue and Digital) to complement the audio track. This DV or animation work will be the primary part of this project. Experimenting with images, video effects and audio to re-enforce or compliment the audio track.

STAGES

1 – Research and discuss concepts of the future of humanity.

2 – Choose an area that you will use to find people then question them.

Note – Questions and topics could be…

The future of - Telephones and Communication
Computers
Entertainment
Marriage and divorce
Games
Religion
Nationalism and Patriotism
Locality and Community
Architecture
Art
Children and Childhood
Medicine and Longevity
Etc

You must Research and decide an area for yourself.

2 - Research and analyze possible candidates for interview.

3 – Begin test interviews and recordings.

4 – Conceptualize the nature of the visuals, animation and effects for the movie.

5 – Test experiments with DV and animation

(it’s your choice, but experiment is the key here)

6 – Preliminary assemble of audio and video

7 – Further experiments

8 – Final cut

9 – Final assembly of everybody’s work into one single 30 or 40 minute movie.

10 – Title and credits

11 – Dissemination

(I envisage dissemination through the “Bit Torrent network” for maximum exposure).

REQUIREMENTS

I expect the result of this project to be a short descriptive film. Of between 2 and 3 minutes per person or team.
All the final movies will be assembled into one whole with a title sequence and an end credit sequence.

Note I will be credited as Director and you will be credited as “Video artist”.
